While many versions of the story of Medusa exist this version focused on the one where she is turned into a monster. The story says that Medusa was one of the most beautiful women on earth, many men admired her and claimed she was more beautiful then Athena, goddess of love. Medusa became a priestess of Athena, pledging herself to a life of celibacy. While worshiping in the temple her beauty caught the attention of Poseidon, god of the sea. The story varies as to if they fell in love or he forced her, they consummated in Athena’s temple thus desecrating it. Athena was enraged by Medusas act and cursed her by stealing her beauty. She grew snake hair and a stone gaze, making it so no man could look upon her again. Medusa lost her sanity and became the monster that is later seen in the story of Perseus, luring men to be turned into stone.
